Survey: Small businesses hold line on hiring

More than half of U.S. small business owners, 53%, plan to maintain current staffing levels, according to a survey for the Wells Fargo/Gallup small business index. And 52% said it is "very unlikely" tax credits for hiring unemployed workers would encourage them to hire new employees in 2010.

Jobless claims fall by 14,000

U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended May 22 fell by 14,000, or 3.0%, to 460,000 from the previous week's revised number, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Analysts had expected the number to fall to 455,000, The Associated Press reported.

Report: Japan temp numbers down 42%

Japan Today reported the number of workers sent out by staffing companies in fiscal 2009 fell 42.4% to 2.3 million, according to the Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. It marked the first decline in five years.
