New York has highest workers’ comp rates, North Dakota posts the lowest

October 12, 2018

A study ranking workers’ comp premium rates found that New York has the highest, followed by California and New Jersey. The lowest was in North Dakota.

New York’s premium rate was $3.08 per $100 of payroll based on rates in effect on Jan. 1 of this year. North Dakota’s was 82 cents.

The study measured rates in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and was produced by the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services. The agency has conducted similar reports biannually since 1986, when Oregon’s workers’ comp rates were among the highest. The state has since brought rates down, and the newest study shows that it had the sixth-least expense rates and ranks No. 46 with a premium rate of $1.15 per $100 of payroll. The median rate for the US was $1.70.

To ensure numbers are comparable, the Oregon study takes the 50 industries with the highest workers’ compensation claims costs in Oregon and calculates the rates for those same industries in each state.
