Amazon and UPS to each hire 100,000 workers; others also announce hiring plans

Amazon this week announced it is hiring 100,000 new full- and part-time employees across the US and Canada. Separately, UPS announced plans last week to hire 100,000 seasonal workers for the end-of-year holiday season.

At Amazon, workers will earn at least $15 per hour, receive benefits from day one and get a sign-on bonus of up to $1,000 in select cities. The company said the hiring comes as it opens 100 new operations buildings in September alone. Amazon has already opened more than 75 new delivery locations this year in the US and Canada.

In addition, Amazon earlier announced it is hiring for 33,000 corporate and technology jobs. CNN reports the average compensation package will be $150,000.

Meanwhile, UPS announced it plans to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees to handle an anticipated increase in volume beginning in October and continuing through January. The company noted about 35% of those hired for seasonal package-handler jobs over the last three years were later hired in a permanent position. Overall, nearly a third of the company’s US workforce started in seasonal positions.

Earlier this month, FedEx Corp. announced plans to hire 70,000 seasonal workers for the end-of-year holiday season.

Other hiring plans were unveiled recently as well.

Randstad reported it is hiring more than 500 workers for warehouse job openings for shoe and apparel maker adidas at a location in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

“We’ve seen an increase in job orders for warehouse jobs, especially as we enter a peak staffing cycle as retailers prepare for the holiday season,” said Sherry Dixon, senior VP, Randstad US. “As we get more people back to work, safety is of the utmost importance, and we've implemented many protocols and guidelines to keep our workers safe and on the job.”

Entry-level warehouse workers, order processors and fulfillment team members at the adidas site will receive between $12.50 and $13.25 per hour based on their shift.
