Jobless claims in US rise after falling to four-decade low (Bloomberg)

October 20, 2016

Filings for US unemployment benefits rose last week by the most since July, after spending several weeks at or near a four-decade low, Bloomberg reports. The US four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance rose to 251,750 last week, up 2,250 from the previous week’s revised average, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the US Department of Labor. The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended Oct. 15 were 260,000, up 13,000 from the previous week’s revised level.
