Human cloud, ride-sharing firms: Careem announces security breach, Didi starts Mexico operations

April 23, 2018

Careem, a human cloud, ride-sharing firm based in Dubai, reported today that online criminals gained access to its computer systems and customer and driver data on Jan. 14. Information taken includes customers’ names, email addresses, phone numbers and trip data. Reuters reported 14 million users were affected. Careem said there is no evidence credit card information was taken as it is kept on external third-party servers.

“As soon as we detected the breach, we launched a thorough investigation and engaged leading cybersecurity experts to assist us in strengthening our security systems,” the company said in a statement. “We are also working with law enforcement agencies.”

Careem operates in 13 countries in the Middle East.

Separately, China-based ride-sharing firm Didi Chuxing announced in a blog post that it is entering the Mexican market. It’s starting operations in Toluca, a city that lies just west of Mexico City. Didi has been expanding in Latin America and already has operations in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. TechCrunch reported Didi began recruiting drivers in April.
