Activity in the US manufacturing sector expanded in February at a faster rate than January, according to the Institute for Supply Management's "Manufacturing ISM Report on Business." However, growth in employment slowed as hiring remains a challenge."The US manufacturing sector remains in a demand-driven, supply chain-constrained environment," said Timothy Fiore, chair of the ISM's manufacturing business survey committee.

A survey found that 60% of light industrial businesses struggled to keep up with increased demand in 2021, and staff retention was a big hurdle amid the ongoing labor shortage.

UK-based global staffing firm Impellam Group sold Corestaff, its US-based light industrial brand, for $19 million to Swipejobs Inc.The transaction was announced on Jan. 24 and completed Feb. 8.  Corestaff had revenue of approximately $97.3 million in the fiscal year ended Jan.

Ascend Staffing acquired WorkStaffing, a staffing firm with locations in Omaha and Council Bluffs, Nebraska. WorkStaffing provides staffing in the light industrial, clerical and warehousing industries.The deal closed in late December and financial terms were not disclosed. WorkStaffing will take on the Ascend Staffing brand.Based in North Salt Lake, Utah, Ascend Staffing now has 45 branches in 15 states. It targets the light industrial, non-clinical hospital, warehousing and clerical sectors.
