Taiwan – Nearly half of women say they have experienced harassment in workplace (Focus Taiwan)

12 March 2021

Nearly half, 43%, of Taiwan's women have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace but only 10% of them reported these cases to their companies, reports Focus Taiwan, citing survey data from the Modern Women's Foundation. Among them, 41.7% have received unwanted sexual attention from supervisors and 39.3% from coworkers. However, 10.3% of the affected women reported these cases to their companies. MWF Chairwoman Wang Ju-hsuan said most women who have been sexually harassed at work choose not to report the incident for fear of losing their jobs. Wang said that under the Act of Gender Equality in Employment that took effect in 2002, employers hiring over 30 employees should take appropriate measures to prevent sexual harassment from happening. However, currently 87% percent of Taiwanese companies that hire 30 or more staff are following the law, according to Wang. Wang called on the labor authorities to conduct inspections on those companies that have yet to establish such anti-sexual harassment measures and levy fines.
