South Korea – Number of temp employees up 6.9% in August, jobless rate improves

The number of temporary employees in South Korea was 4.85 million in August 2021, up 6.9% when compared to the same period last year, according to data published by Statistics Korea.

When compared to the previous month, the number of temporary employees in South Korea fell slightly by 0.5% in August 2021.

Statistics Korea also published labour market figures for August 2021. The unemployment rate stood at 2.6% in August, down 0.5%, year-on-year.

The number of unemployed persons totaled 744,000 people in August, which decreased by 120,000 persons or 13.9%, year on year.

The number of employed persons totaled 27.603 million persons in August, which went up by 518,000 persons or 1.9% year on year.

The electricity, transport, communication & finance sector saw the biggest increase in employed persons (up 6.3% over the year.) This was followed by the construction sector which saw an increase of 6.1% over the year.

The economically active population was 28.34 million persons in August which grew by 398,000 persons or 1.4% year-on-year.

The labour force participation rate stood at 62.8% in August, up 0.4%.
