Singapore – Unemployment rate inches up slightly in July (The Straits Times)

07 September 2021

Singapore’s unemployment rate in July stood at 2.8% up from 2.7%  in June, reports The Straits Times, citing research from the Ministry of Manpower. For the first time in ten months, Singapore's resident and citizen unemployment rates saw a slight increase in July, rising 0.2% each, following tightened Covid-19 restrictions under the country’s phase two (heightened alert) Covid-19 restrictions.

Figures from the Ministry showed that the resident unemployment rate, which covers Singapore citizens and permanent residents, rose from 3.5% to 3.7% while unemployment among Singapore citizens rose from 3.7% to 3.9%. Manpower Minister Tan See Leng said this likely reflected "a dip in demand for manpower in affected sectors such as food and beverage (F&B) and retail trade".
