Number of temporary workers in South Korea drops 2.8% in June

The number of temporary workers in South Korea declined by 2.8% year over year to approximately 4.68 million in June 2023, according to data released by Statistics Korea.

When compared to the previous month, the number of temporary workers fell slightly by 0.02% in June 2023. The temporary employment data is not seasonally adjusted.

Further labour market data from Statistics Korea showed that the unemployment rate marked 2.7% in June, down 0.3% year-on-year and unchanged over the month.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate stood at 2.6% in June 2023, down 0.3% from the year prior and up 0.1% the month prior.

The number of unemployed persons totalled 807,000 people in June, which decreased 81,000 persons or 9.1% year-on-year.

At the same time, the number of employed persons totalled 28.81 million persons in June, which went up 333,000 persons or 1.2%year-on-year.

The employment to population ratio recorded 62.7% in April, up 0.6% year-on-year.

By industry, the ‘business, personal, public service & other’ industry reported the highest annual growth at 2.6%. On the other hand, agriculture, forestry & fishing saw the steepest decline over the year (-0.8%).

The economically active population marked 29.618 million persons in June, which grew 252,000 persons or 0.9%year-on-year. Meanwhile, the labour force participation rate stood at 65.3% in June, up 0.4%, year-on-year.
