Japan – Average hourly wage for temporary workers in major metro areas rises to record high

The average hourly wage for temporary workers across three major metropolitan areas in Japan for November 2022 stood at a record high JPY 1,555 (USD 11.79), up JPY 60 (USD 0.45) from the previous year, and up JPY 9 (USD 0.068) from the previous month, according to staffing firm and job board Dip Corp.

The research was based on a survey from Dip Corp’s subsidiary temporary jobs site Hatarako.

Average hourly wages reached record highs in all areas: 

The Kanto area average hourly wage was JPY 1,651 (USD 12.52), up JPY 65 (USD 0.49) from the previous year and up JPY 8 (USD 0.061) from the previous month; the Tokai area average hourly wage is JPY 1,383 (USD 10.49), up JPY 34 (USD 0.26) from the previous year and up JPY 4 (USD 0.030) from the previous month); and the Kansai area average hourly wage is JPY 1,429 (USD 10.83) up JPY 42 (USD 0.32) from the previous year, up JPY 8 (USD 0.061) from the previous month.

Meanwhile, the number of job vacancies for temporary jobs was approximately 169,000, a decrease of 8.2% from the previous year.

Dip Corp’s data also found that average hourly wages by job category increased year-on-year in four major sectors including clerical work/office, web/creator, IT/engineer-related and research/education-related.
