Australia – Labour hire workers still waiting for residency (The Sydney Morning Herald)

24 May 2021

Scott Shi’s recruitment and labour hire operations supplied more than 1,100 foreign workers a year to abattoirs and generated revenue of AUD 349 million (USD 271 million) between 2008 and 2017; then his operations were searched by Australia Federal police, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. Warrants listed Shi as being suspected of 11 criminal offences. Workers also allegedly paid as much as AUD 70,000 (USD 54,342) to syndicates while still in their home countries to get jobs in Australia saying they were promised sponsorship for permanent residency in Australia. However, that has yet to happen for 150 workers from China and Vietnam, according to the newspaper. The paper reported it was not suggesting that Shi was paid directly by the workers.
