Australia – App-based jobs grow 15% since before pandemic (Australian Financial Review)

03 March 2021

Jobs in Australia’s app economy have grown by 15% since before the pandemic, reports The Australian Financial Review citing a report from the Progressive Policy Institute. There were 156,000 jobs in Australia’s app economy as of January 2021, up from 136,000 in January 2019. This figure mostly includes “core” app economy jobs that require coding and engineering skills, followed by “indirect” jobs like sales, marketing and finance roles at those same organisations, plus an estimate of jobs supported by income from goods and services flowing from apps, such as building managers. As of January 2021, Australia had an app intensity of 1.2, higher than Germany (0.7) and comparable to the UK (1.1), but behind Canada (1.4) and the US (1.7). App intensity represents the number of app economy jobs as a share of total jobs. Despite the app economy’s growth, Apple and Google’s dominance over the app store market is the subject of ongoing monopoly power debates.
