UK – Gangmaster shut down for ‘systematically exploiting’ workers (Farmers Weekly)

30 January 2018

A Cornish gangmaster has been shut down by the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority for exploiting her workers, reports Farmers Weekly. Businesswoman Neringa Butkeviciute operated DNK Recruitment out of a caravan Park in Hayle. She had been providing workers to harvest and process crops at a nearby vegetable producer as well as a seafood processing factory. An inspection from the GLAA found that the recruitment firm skimmed workers’ pay, sent workers to double shifts without proper breaks, incorrectly calculated holiday pay and provided unsafe accommodation. DNK Recruitment failed eight of the GLAA’s licencing standards. GLAA Head of Licensing Charlotte Woodliffe, commented, “Having read through the evidence we uncovered in this case it was clear that the profits of the company appeared to be the only concern for DNK Recruitment. No care or concern was shown about whether the workers were being treated fairly, receiving the correct amounts of time off and wages or were housed in safe and sanitary living accommodation.” DNK has not appealed the revocation decision and is reported to have ceased trading.
