Demand for IT professionals in the UK grew by almost 25% between 2015 and 2017, according to data from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies and Vacancysoft.

 The data showed that this growth in demand was 7.5% higher than the overall growth rate for IT professionals. Development & Engineering professionals, IT Management and IT support roles are all in high demand, followed by IT Analysts and IT Infrastructure.

“Organisations of all sizes are developing an increased awareness of the need to innovate and keep pace with ever evolving technological shifts, so it is somewhat unsurprising that the demand for IT developers and engineers is currently outpacing all other disciplines,” Ann Swain, chief executive of APSCo, said.

“Organisations looking to hire mobile developers will no doubt be looking for professionals in native iOS or Android programming using Swift, Objective-C and Java, while in demand skills for front-end developers will likely be HTML, JavaScript and CSS.”

Geographical distribution analysis shows that the highest number of positions are available in London, over the 24 month period to February 2017 it accounted for 47% of all IT vacancies. However, of all six regions, London’s growth year on year growth was the slowest at 0.9%.

“While it’s unsurprising to see that nearly half of all IT roles are located in London, it is certainly promising to see that demand for professionals also continues to rise elsewhere in the UK, such as Yorkshire & the Humber, where IT vacancies rose 14% year on year to February 2017. As cities such as Bristol and Reading, where the average of start-ups born each year are 225 and 605 respectively, continue to grow and establish themselves as international tech hubs, it is highly likely that this trend of growth will continue,” Swain said.
