Switzerland – Adecco Swiss Job Market Index stable in Q2, job vacancies dip

07 July 2017

The latest Swiss Job Market Index by Adecco remained stable for the second quarter of 2017 when compared to the same period last year. The number of job vacancies fell by 6% on an annual basis due to seasonal affects.

The quarterly Job Index is run in partnership with the University of Zurich. The index showed that on an annual basis, all regions except Central Switzerland and Northwestern Switzerland showed an increase in job vacancies.

The Lake Geneva region posted the highest increases in the number of job vacancies, on both an annual and a quarterly basis. In one year, the number of vacancies jumped by 26%, while growth was 20% compared to the previous quarter.

Overall, growth was highest in construction and development, which was up 38%, year-on-year. The technical and natural sciences sectors also showed growth (17%), as well as the industrial and transport sector (11%). Meanwhile the education and public services sector saw a decline (-14%) for the same period, reflecting a partial freeze on recruitment.

According to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, unemployment in Switzerland stood at a seasonally adjusted 3.2% in June, a sign the labour market is holding up well despite the strong Swiss franc.
