Europe – Employment up in Euro area and EU28

Employment increased by 1.4% in both the euro area and the EU28 when compared with the first quarter of 2017, according to seasonally-adjusted data from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

 Eurostat’s estimates show that in the first quarter of 2018, there were 237.9 million men and women employed in the EU28, of which 157.2 million were in the euro area. These are the highest levels ever recorded in both areas.

Among member states for which data are available for the first quarter of 2018, Malta (+5.3%), Croatia (+4.6%) and Cyprus (+4.0) recorded the highest increases compared with the previous year. The lowest decrease was reported in Lithuania (+0.1).
