Europe – Advocate general says part of Uber’s services are illegal (Reuters)

04 July 2017

Uber suffered a setback to its expansion plans in Europe today when an advocate general for the Court of Justice of the European Union said France was entitled to charge local managers of the ride sharing app with running an illegal taxi service, reports Reuters. Last year the company was fined $900,000 by France for illegal transportation operations with UberPOP. UberPOP allowed anyone to become a driver without a special license. Uber played down the non-binding opinion from the advocate general saying it applied only to UberPOP which it had already discontinued in France. Judges will make a final ruling later this year.
