South Dakota posted the lowest jobless rate among all US states in April at 1.9%, the US Bureau of Statistics reported today. The next lowest rates were in Nebraska at 2.0%, followed by New Hampshire and North Dakota at 2.1% each.
Nevada, at 5.4%, had the highest unemployment rate among all states in April.
In addition, 10 states in April posted their lowest jobless rates since 1976: Alabama, 2.2%; Arizona, 3.4%; Arkansas, 2.8%; Kentucky, 3.7%; Maine, 2.4%; Maryland, 2.5%; Mississippi, 3.4%; Ohio, 3.7%; West Virginia, 3.3%; and Wisconsin 2.4%.
The state with the largest year-over-year decrease in its jobless rate was New Mexico, down 0.8 percentage points to 3.5%.
Meanwhile, the largest year-over-year unemployment rate increases occurred in Kansas, Minnesota and Virginia, up 0.5 percentage points each.
