Online advertised job vacancies rise in December, gains widespread across states

January 03, 2018

Online advertised job vacancies rose by 229,700 in December to a total of more than 4.9 million, according to the The Conference Board’s Help Wanted Online data series released today. Gains were widespread across all regions and most states.

Online labor demand rose in 48 states, decline in one and was constant in another. California added 27,800 online advertised job vacancies in December, the most of any state. It was followed by Texas, which added 19,300. The only state with a decline was Delaware, which decreased by 200.

Chicago was the metropolitan area to add the most online advertised job vacancies in December with the addition of 10,500. It was followed by New York with 9,700.

The occupation with the largest increase in online advertised job vacancies was “education, training and library” with an increase of 56,000.

The Conference Board noted the data series has experienced a declining trend that may not reflect the broader trend in the US labor market, and it is reviewing the methodology of the measure.
