Nonmanufacturing index for US rises in August

Economic activity in the US nonmanufacturing sector increased in September at a faster pace than August. The Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturing composite index rose to a reading of 57.1 from August’s reading of 51.4.

Readings above 50 indicate expansion in the sector.

The employment portion of the index also rose September for the fourth consecutive month. The index rose 6.5 percentage points to 57.2 from the August reading of 50.7.

Nine industries reported increased employment, and five industries reported decreased employment.

The management of companies and support services industry reported the largest increase, followed by educational services, construction and retail trade.

Five industries reported a reduction in employment in September: Mining; other services; utilities; public administration; and arts, entertainment and recreation.
