Job openings edge up in January, hires also increase

March 16, 2017

The number of US job openings in January from December rose 1.6% to 5.63 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of hires also rose, up 2.6% from December.

The job openings rate — a measure of job openings compared with total employment — remained at 3.7% in January.

MarketWatch reported that workers also left their jobs in January at a rate that matched the fastest during the economic recovery, a sign of the increased willingness to look for a new and likely better-paying job.
