Hiring plans flat for Q4, but pay to rise, CareerBuilder reports

October 06, 2016

Employers expect seasonal and permanent employment to hold steady in the fourth quarter, according to CareerBuilder’s annual Q4 Job Forecast released today. However, paychecks are expected to increase.

Looking across industries, the survey found 33% of employers expect to hire seasonal workers in the fourth quarter, unchanged from a similar survey last year. An increasing number of these employers view seasonal hiring as a means to test-drive candidates for more permanent roles, with 62% expecting to hire some of their seasonal staff for full-time positions, up from 57% last year and a significant increase from 42% two years ago.

Thirty-four percent of employers plan to add full-time, permanent employees in the fourth quarter, also on par with last year. And 9% expect to reduce staff, similar to 10% last year, while 53% anticipate no change and 4% are unsure.

“Overall, permanent and seasonal hiring in the fourth quarter will be on par with last year, with one-third of employers planning to add staff in either category,” CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson said. “However, campaigns for a higher minimum wage, paired with a tighter labor market for lower-skill and semi-skill jobs, is giving job seekers more of an edge when it comes to compensation. Wage growth, while still a serious concern, will likely see a lift in the coming months.”

When queried about pay, 47% of employers said they expect to increase pay for seasonal workers in the fourth quarter, up 10 percentage points over last year. Of those hiring seasonal employees, 75% will pay $10 or more per hour, up from 72% last year, and 28% expect to pay $16 or more per hour, up from 19% last year.

Regarding full-time, permanent employees, 68% of employers plan to increase salaries for these workers in the fourth quarter, with 28% anticipating an average pay increase of 5% or more.

The amount of retailers planning to hire seasonal help in the fourth quarter edged down to 49% from 53% in last year’s survey. However, of those retailers hiring seasonal help, 53% will pay $10 or more per hour, up from 43% in 2015.

The survey also reviewed third-quarter hiring, and found 38% of employers added full-time, permanent headcount in the third quarter, relatively unchanged from 39% last year. Only 10% decreased headcount in the past quarter, on par with the third quarter of last year. Fifty percent made no change, and 1% was unsure.

Seasonal positions companies are hiring for in the fourth quarter include:

  • Customer service: 37%
  • Administrative/clerical support: 19%
  • Accounting/finance: 16%
  • Inventory management: 16%
  • Shipping and delivery: 16%
  • Technology: 15%
  • Marketing: 13%
  • Sales (non-retail): 13%
  • Hosting/greeting: 13%

The survey was conducted online within the US by Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder among 2,379 hiring and human resource managers. The survey was conducted between Aug. 11 and Sept. 6.
