Jobless claims rise by 11,000

The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 11,000, or 2.1%, to 531,000 in the week ended Oct. 17, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The number of initial claims for the previous week was also revised upward to 520,000 from 514,000.
