Amazon to hire 100,000 new workers in US, raise pay amid Covid-19 pandemic

Amazon announced in a blog post that it is hiring 100,000 new full- and part-time workers in the US at its fulfillment centers and delivery network. The tech giant said the workers are needed as it sees a surge in demand amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The company is hiring despite economic forecasters saying the US is in a recession.

“We also know many people have been economically impacted as jobs in areas like hospitality, restaurants, and travel are lost or furloughed as part of this crisis,” according to the post. “We want those people to know we welcome them on our teams until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back.”

The company also said it will pay workers in the US an additional $2 per hour worked through April from its current rate of $15 per hour or more depending on the region. Workers in the UK will get an extra £2 per hour and those in many European Union locations will get an extra €2 per hour.

Amazon also said it’s taking precautions to keep people healthy in its buildings and stores and it’s working with health experts. These precautions include social distancing in the workplace and enhanced and frequent cleaning.
