Hiring plans: Amazon to hire 125,000 at $18 per hour starting pay; UPS seeking 100,000-plus for holiday season

Amazon plans to hire an additional 125,000 workers and UPS plans to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees.

Amazon

Amazon announced plans to hire an additional 125,000 workers for full- and part-time jobs in fulfillment and transportation. The roles will have an average starting wage of more than $18 per hour and up to $22.50 in some locations. Hiring bonuses of up to $3,000 are also available in certain locations.

Today’s announcement is in addition to the 40,000 jobs reported earlier this month.

The company reported it also provides full-time employees with benefits from the first day that are worth an additional $3.50 per hour. The benefits include health, vision and dental insurance. The company has a 401(k) plan with 50% company match. It also announced a plan to pay full college tuition for its front-line employees.

Amazon noted it has hired more than 450,000 people in the US since the start of the pandemic.

The company also said it works with more than 2,500 delivery services partners, who are building their own companies. These partners plan to hire 50,000 delivery associates by the end of the year.

UPS

UPS plans to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees to handle an annual increase in package volume anticipated to begin in October and continue through January.

“We’re preparing for another safe, record peak holiday season. With Covid-19 continuing to impact Americans, our services are more important than ever,” said Nando Cesarone, president, US operations. “We plan to hire more than 100,000 people for seasonal jobs, many of whom will have an offer in hand within 30 minutes of applying.”

Seasonal positions being filled at UPS include both full- and part-time jobs such as package handlers, drivers, driver helpers and personal vehicle drivers.

UPS noted that about a third of people hired for seasonal package handler jobs were later hired as permanent employees. The company also reported that 74% of seasonal hires want their job to turn into a long-term position; it cited a survey of 1,000 past, present and potential seasonal workers.

Seasonal employees at UPS will also be able to earn up to $1,300 toward college expenses.
