Leadership changes at IT services provider Infosys; co-founder returns as chairman

IT services provider Infosys appointed Nandan Nilekani as the nonexecutive chairman of the board, effective Aug. 24. The appointment follows the Aug. 18 resignation of managing director and CEO Vishal Sikka after a long-running feud with the company’s founders.

Nilekani is one of the co-founders of Infosys and served as its CEO from 2002 to 2007. He plans to remain at the helm only until the business stabilizes and said that the next few months would be devoted to building a strategy and finding a new chief executive, Moneycontrol reported.

With Nilekani’s appointment, Chairman R. Seshasayee stepped down from the board, as did former CEO Sikka, Jeffrey Lehman and John Etchemendy. The Times of India reported a dispute has raged for months with the company’s founders accusing directors of governance lapses. Sikka called the accusations baseless attacks.

“Nandan is the ideal leader for Infosys at this stage in the company’s development,” Seshasayee said in Thursday's announcement. “His appointment will allow Infosys to focus on the strategic changes it needs to make in order to capitalize on the attractive opportunities in the years ahead. Under Nandan, Infosys will build a cohesive management team that will no doubt take the company to a leadership position in the industry.”

U. B. Pravin Rao was named as interim CEO following interim CEO and managing director Sikka’s resignation and will remain in that role while the board will continue with its earlier-stated plan to identify a permanent replacement. Infosys also announced that Ravi Venkatesan left his role as co-chairman, but will remain on the board.
