Leading healthcare staffing firms post $39 billion in revenue

Each year Staffing Industry Analysts ranks staffing companies in order of revenue size according to industry custom as a way of identifying the market’s key participants. The rankings do not imply that a staffing firm with a higher ranking provides superior service or additional value to its shareholders, but rather provides staffing buyers with a market share report to expand their awareness and allows staffing firms to identify potential subcontractors and partners. The report also contains a breakdown of the largest staffing firms by each segment including travel nursing, per diem nursing, locum tenens and allied. The market saw a powerful increase in revenue in 2021 as 81 firms generated more than $50 million in US healthcare temporary staffing, according to SIA, bringing the healthcare staffing revenue total to $39.2 billion for these leading firms. This is up $21.5 billion from the 59 firms highlighted in the prior year’s report. The report also identifies 26 firms who were not featured in last year’s report.

The market share of the five and 10 largest healthcare staffing firms last year accounted for 33% and 48% of the market, respectively. This represents an increase from the 27% and 40% levels observed in 2008 when SIA started tracking these metrics. However, in 2013 we saw a continuous increase in market share among these firms, eventually reaching a high in 2019. This growth stems from both business expansion and acquisitions and highlights a degree of market consolidation that mimics long-term trends of consolidation among healthcare providers.
