Supplemental Health Care: Leaders step down to launch new firm, new execs named

Several executives from Supplemental Health Care left the Park City, Utah-based healthcare staffing firm and launched RecruitIQ Staffing, a commercial staffing agency focusing on healthcare and non-healthcare organizations. Supplemental named a new CEO, CFO and senior VP to lead the firm in the wake of the departures.

Executives leaving the Supplemental Health care include President and CEO Janet Elkin, COO Laura Magner, Chief Development Officer Cheryl Wilhelm, and CMO Mike Dunagan.

“A dynamic company is almost always a reflection of a strong, functional management team,” said Magner. “Not only do we collectively have an incredible amount of hands-on, operational experience helping clients solve their workforce challenges, but we share a common vision for what we want our company to be and how we will achieve those goals.”

Private equity firm Vistria Group in December acquired Supplemental Health Care, which ranks No. 7 on Staffing Industry Analysts’ list of largest US healthcare staffing firms.

Elkin resigned from Supplemental in March. She is profiled in Staffing Industry Analysts’ Staffing 100 list of most influential people in the staffing industry.

“It was a hard decision,” Elkin said. “I had been there for 13 years, CEO for six, and loved the company. But it was just time to head in a new direction and I had this opportunity to start a new company.”

The new venture is funded by the executives, who are part owners, as well as more than 10 investors.

Initially, RecruitIQ Staffing is operating in two markets: Dallas, where Elkin is based, and Dayton, Ohio, where Magner is based. It will open in Buffalo, NY, where Wilhelm is based, within the next three months.

RecruitIQ Staffing will initially focus on administrative and professional level temporary and temp-to-perm placements, with a special emphasis on non-clinical placements within the healthcare industry. The company also will provide human resource consulting services, focusing primarily on the healthcare segment.

“Our focus will initially be on non-clinical staffing — I am honoring my non-compete agreement — but staying in healthcare because healthcare is what I know and love,” Elkin said.

Meanwhile, Supplemental Health Care has promoted CFO Steve Ure to CEO to replace Elkin, Ure had served as CFO. The company also hired Monty Houdeshell to backfill the CFO position.

Houdeshell most recently was CFO at CoWorx Staffing Services, a New Jersey-based commercial staffing company. He previously served as CFO at several firms, including RemedyTemp Inc., and for seven years was chairman of the board at Nelson Family of Companies.

The company also promoted Melissa (Missy) Blakenship to senior VP to take over the majority of the operations, reporting directly to Ure. Blakenship joined the company more than 11 years ago and most recently was VP field operations.

Supplemental Health Care operates more than 60 local offices in major markets across the US. Its four national divisions — travel nursing, travel allied, locum tenens and direct hire — place nursing, therapy and imaging, physician and health information management professionals. The company also provides managed service provider and recruitment process outsourcing programs.
