Engineering employment shows renewed strength: TechServe Alliance

Engineering employment showed renewed strength in November compared to October, according to the TechServe Alliance, a trade association of the IT and engineering staffing and solutions industry.

The number of jobs in engineering rose 0.35% in November for total employment of near 2.7 million, according to the TechServe Alliance. Engineering employment also rose by 1.67% year over year — which represents 44,000 engineering workers on a net basis.

Looking at IT employment, the number of IT jobs ticked down 0.07% in November compared to October for total employment of approximately 5.4 million. It was down by 0.01% year over year, or 500 IT workers on a net basis.

“In the face of an otherwise strong overall jobs report, IT employment declined on year-over-year basis,” said Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. “Unlike the last year-over-year decline in IT employment which was a demand-based contraction, the weakness in IT employment over the past year has been exclusively a supply-driven phenomenon.”

“Given the number of new entrants into STEM fields domestically is insufficient to meet demand coupled with highly restrictive immigration policies, we do not anticipate a material improvement in the state of the IT talent supply within the foreseeable future,” Roberts said.
