Temporary workers’ wages in Japan rise across major metro areas

The average hourly wage in October 2023 for temporary workers across three Japanese major metropolitan areas (Kanto, Tokai and Kansai) stood at JPY 1,587 (USD 10.64), up JPY 41 (USD 0.28) from the previous year and up JPY 11 (USD 0.07) from the previous month, according to data from Dip Corp. (2379:TYO), a staffing firm and job board operator based in Tokyo.

The data was based on the job advertisement data for temporary workers posted on Hatarako Net, a job information site for employees, temporary workers, and part-time workers.

Further data showed the number of temporary staff job openings was approximately 177,000, an increase of 3.8% from the previous year and a decrease of 4.3% from the previous month.

The average hourly wage in the Kanto area is JPY 1,669 (USD 11.19), an increase of JPY 26 (USD 0.17) from the previous year, an increase of JPY 4 (USD 0.03) from the previous month.

In the Tokai area, the average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,410 (USD 9.46), an increase of JPY 31 (USD 0.21) from the previous year, an increase of JPY 3 (USD 0.02) from the previous month.

Meanwhile, in the Kansai area the average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,480 (USD 9.93) in the Kansai area. This was a JPY 56 (USD 0.38) increase compared to the previous year, and a JPY 27 (USD 0.18) increase compared to the previous month.

Separate data from Dip Corp and part-time job information site Baitoru showed that the average hourly wage for part-time workers in October was JPY 1,356 (USD 9.09). This was an increase of JPY 145 (USD 0.97) compared to the previous year, an increase of JPY 20 (USD 0.13) compared to the previous month.

The number of job openings posted on Baitoru was approximately 298,000, an increase of 9.1% compared to the previous year and compared to the previous month. This was an increase of 1.9%.

The average hourly wage for part-time workers in the Kanto area is JPY 1,387 (USD 9.30), an increase of JPY 127 (USD 0.85) compared to the previous year, and an increase of JPY 34 (USD 0.23) compared to the previous month.

The average hourly wage in the Tokai area is JPY 1,321 (USD 8.86), an increase of JPY 132 (USD 0.89) compared to the previous year, and an increase of JPY 8 (USD 0.05) compared to the previous month.

Meanwhile, the average hourly wage in the Kyushu area was JPY 1,366 (USD 9.16), an increase of JPY 213 (USD 1.43) compared to the previous year, an increase of JPY 15 (USD 0.10) compared to the previous month.
