Temp workers wages for major Japanese metros up in February

The average hourly wage in February 2024 for temporary workers across three major Japanese metropolitan areas (Kanto, Tokai and Kansai) stood at JPY 1,575 (USD 10.47), up JPY 23 (USD 0.15) from the previous year and up JPY 10 (USD 0.06) from the last month, according to data from Dip Corp. (2379:TYO), a staffing firm and job board operator based in Tokyo.

The data was based on the job advertisement data for temporary workers posted on Hatarako Net, a job information site for employees, temporary workers, and part-time workers.

Additional research showed the number of temporary staff job openings was approximately 204,000, an increase of 3.3% from the previous year but an increase of 17.6% from the previous month.

Broken down by area, the average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,652 (USD 10.98) in the Kanto area (an increase of JPY 3 (USD 0.02) from the previous year and JPY 12 (USD 0.08) from the previous month). The average was JPY 1,429 (USD 9.50) in the Tokai area (an increase of JPY 43 (USD 0.29) from the previous year and an increase of JPY 28 (USD 0.19) from the previous month.

In the Kansai metro area, the average hourly wage was JPY 1,466 (USD 9.74) (a JPY 31 (USD 0.21) increase from the previous year and a JPY 3 (USD 0.02) decrease from the previous month).
