South Korea – Number of temporary workers up 3.7% in March, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate improves

South Korea’s temporary workers saw an increase of 3.7% year over year to 4.65 million in March 2022, according to data released by Statistics Korea.

When compared to the previous month, the number of temporary workers grew by 2.7%.

Statistics Korea data also showed that the unemployment rate stood at 3.0% in March, down 1.3% year-on-year.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate stood at 2.7%, down from 3.8% compared to the previous year and unchanged from the previous month.

The number of unemployed persons totalled 873,000 people in March, which decreased by 342,000 persons or 28.2% year-on-year.

The number of employed persons totalled 27.75 million persons in March, which went up 831,000 persons or 3.1% year on year.

By sector, the business, personal, public service & others sector saw a 5.3% increase while on the other hand, wholesale & retail trade, accommodation & food reported a decrease of 1.0%.

The statistics agency said the trend of job growth has been extended every month since March last year amid the economic recovery.

"But as uncertainty about the virus situation and exports remains high, we need to gauge the job market situation going forward," Kong Mi-suk, a senior Statistics Korea official, told The Korea Herald.

South Korea’s economically active population stood at 28.62 million persons in March, which grew 489,000 persons or 1.7% year-on-year. The labour force participation rate stood at 63.3% in March, up 0.8% year-on-year.
