South Korea – Number of temporary employees up 8.8% in April, jobless rate down slightly

The number of temporary employees in South Korea was 4.66 million in April 2021, up 8.8% when compared to the same period last year, according to data published by Statistics Korea.

When compared to the previous month, the number of temporary employees in South Korea increased by 3.9% in April 2020.

Statistics Korea also published labour market figures for April 2021. The unemployment rate stood at 4.0% in April, down 0.2%, year-on-year.

The number of unemployed persons totaled 1.14 million people in April, which decreased 25,000 persons or 2.1%, year-on-year.

At the same time, the number of employed persons totaled 27.21 million persons in April, which went up 652,000 persons or 2.5% year-on-year.

The construction sector saw the biggest climb in employed persons in April, up 7.3% over the previous year.

Meanwhile, the employment to population ratio stood at 60.4% in April, up 1.0% year-on-year.

In April 2021, the economically active population marked 28.36 million in April which grew 627,000 persons or 2.3% year-on-year.

The labour force participation rate stood at 63.0% in April, up 1.0% year-on-year.
