South Korea – Number of temporary employees down 0.5% in December, unemployment rate improves

The number of temporary workers in South Korea fell by 0.5% year over year to 4.45 million in December 2022, according to the latest data from Statistics Korea.

Compared to the previous month, the number of temporary workers in South Korea fell by 6.5% in December 2022.

Further labour market data from Statistics Korea showed that the unemployment rate marked 3.0% in December, down 0.5% year-on-year. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate also stood at 3.3% in December 2022, up from 2.9% in November 2022 and down from 3.8% in December 2021.

The number of unemployed persons totalled 866,000 people in December, which decreased 113,000 persons or 11.5% year-on-year.

The number of employed persons totalled 27.80 million persons in December, which went up 509,000 persons or 1.9% year-on-year.

The employment to population ratio recorded 61.3% in December, up 0.9%, year-on-year.

The economically active population marked 29.67 million persons in December, which grew 396 thousand persons or 1.4% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the labour force participation rate stood at 63.3% in December, up 0.7% year-on-year.
