Seek job ads in Australia fall 17.5% in January

Australian job ads on job board Seek fell by 17.5% in January 2024 when compared to January 2023.

On a month-on-month basis, job ads increased by 1.3% in January 2024. At the same time, applications per job ad rose by 2.1%.

By state, the Northern Territory recorded the only increase (4.0%) when compared to the prior year. New South Wales reported the steepest decline at 23.9%, followed by Victoria (-23.7%).

On a monthly basis, the Australian Capital Territory saw an increase of 4.9%, the highest among states. This was followed by Queensland (3.2%). On the other hand, Tasmania (-0.3%) and Western Australia (-0.2%) both recorded monthly declines.

Among the top ten industries, ICT recorded an annual fall of 36.2%, the steepest fall. This was followed by the hospitality and tourism industry (-24.2%).

Month-on-month, retail and consumer products recorded the highest increase at 9.6%. This was followed by administration and office support (5.9%). On the other hand, the ICT industry recorded a decline (-4.0%) along with accounting (-0.1%).
