One in four university students use ChatGPT for job searching: Persol

21 July 2023

Approximately one in four of 3rd and 4th year university students (26.5%) have used ChatGPT for job hunting, according to research from Persol.

The research showed that the top use of the service while job hunting was to ‘create reasons for wanting to work at a company’ (63.6% cited this). Meanwhile 60% said they used the service to save time.

Persol’s research also found that when it comes to the benefits, the top advantage experienced by students who used ChatGPT was ‘I was able to realise something that I would not have thought of on my own’ (77.5%).

More than half of students (53.3%) said that the service was ‘somewhat helpful’ in document screening and interview preparation. At the same time, 40.8% said ChatGPT was ‘extremely helpful’ (40.8%), while 5.8% said it was ‘not helpful’.

When asked if they would use ChatGPT in the future for job searching, 63% said yes while 37% said no.

Shinya Okamoto, editor-in-chief of doda Campus, a subsidiary of Persol, said, “Regarding the use of ‘ChatGPT’, it is not limited to student job hunting, but the reality is that there are no clear policies or guidelines established by the country or society, and the risks are not fully assumed. Also, at this time, there is a risk that all personal information / privacy information will be converted into data.”
