Number of temporary workers in South Korea sees 4.7% lift

The number of temporary workers in South Korea improved by 4.7% year over year to approximately 4.61 million in February 2024, according to data released by Statistics Korea.

Temporary workers increased by 6.6% in February 2024 compared to the previous month. The temporary employment data is not seasonally adjusted.

Meanwhile, South Korea's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 2.6% in February 2024, unchanged from the year prior and down from 3.0% when compared to January 2024.

On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate marked 3.2% in February, up 0.1% year-on-year but down 0.5% compared to the prior month.

The number of unemployed persons totalled 915,000 in February, an increase of 25,000 persons or 2.8% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the number of employed persons totalled 28.04 million in February, up 329,000 persons or 1.2%, year-on-year. By sector, the electricity, transport, communication & finance sector saw the highest annual increase at 4.1%.

The employment-to-population ratio recorded 61.6% in February, up 0.5% year-on-year.

South Korea's economically active population marked 28.957 million persons in February, which grew 353,000 persons or 1.2% year-on-year. The labour force participation rate stood at 63.6% in February, up 0.5% year-on-year.

The economically inactive population totalled 16.568 million in February, decreasing 183,000 persons or 1.1% year-on-year.
