New Zealand job ads down 26% in July, all regions report slump

Job ads across New Zealand fell by 26% in July 2023 compared to July 2022, according to the latest research by Seek New Zealand.

Declines were seen across all regions monitored by Seek. The Tasman region decreased by 30% year-on-year which was the steepest fall among regions. Auckland followed with a 29% drop.

By industry, hospitality and tourism reported the biggest decline at 44% over the year. This was followed by the information and communications technology industry (-39%) and retail and consumer products (-35%).

On a monthly basis, national job ads decreased by 4% in July. The Southland region saw the biggest decrease over the month (12%).

In July 2023, the steepest falls were seen in engineering (-8%) and manufacturing, transport and logistics (-8%).

Meanwhile, applications per job rose by 11% in July 2023 when compared to June 2023.
