New Zealand – Number of women in temporary, casual and fixed term on the rise (NZ Herald)

14 June 2021

The number of women in casual, fixed-term or temporary roles in the March quarter was up 4.4% on a year earlier, reports the New Zealand Herald, citing official government data. At the same time, there was a 2.2% drop in women in permanent roles. At the same time, for men, there was a 4.4% drop in those in less secure jobs, and a 0.2% decrease in those in permanent work. Council of Trade Unions secretary Melissa Ansell-Bridges said the industries worst affected by the pandemic are those which women are over-represented in, such as tourism, retail, accommodation and hospitality. The data suggested that while women are now getting back into work following a drop of women in employment last year due to the pandemic, it's in those more precarious casual, fixed term or temporary jobs.  Director of temp employment agency RecruitMum said there are not enough permanent part-time jobs out for women there to meet the demand.
