New Zealand – Number of filled jobs rise slightly in April

Filled jobs across New Zealand for the month of April 2022 rose by 0.6% to a total of 2.29 million filled jobs, compared to March 2022, according to research from Statistics New Zealand. The 0.6% increase is also an uptick from the 0.3% rise seen in April 2021.

By industry, the largest change in the number of filled jobs compared with April 2021 were in the professional, scientific, and technical services which was up 7.7%, or 13,674 jobs. This was followed by construction which was up 6.6% (12,467 jobs), health care and social assistance, up 3.4% or 8,483 jobs, retail trade, up 3.8% (7,779) jobs and public administration and safety which rose 4.4% or 6,411 jobs.

By region, Auckland saw an increase of 3.1% while Canterbury saw a 3.2% rise. Filled jobs in Waikato rose by 3.5%, while in Wellington filled jobs increased by 2.7% and in Bay of Plenty by 2.8%.

In April 2022, compared with April 2021, the number of filled jobs rose by 2.9% (32,517 jobs) for men and rose by 2.9% (32,321 jobs) for women.

By age group, the largest change in the number of filled jobs compared with April 2021 were in the 15–19 years age group, which was up 17.8%.
