Labor shortage prompts more Japanese firms to use workers aged 70 and older (Nikkei Asia)

14 August 2023

Companies in Japan are increasingly turning to older workers, with 39% letting employees work until age 70 and beyond in 2022 — nearly double the number a decade ago, Nikkei Asia reported. Employers are using older workers to plug a gap to fill labour shortages. The article reported those aged 65 and older represented 7% of the working population in Japan compared to 7% in the US and 4% in Germany.
