Japan – Student part-time jobseekers soar in 2022: Recruit

06 March 2023

The number of student jobseekers looking for part-time jobs has increased significantly from 2018 to 2022, according to a survey by Japanese staffing giant Recruit Holdings.

Compared to the 2018 survey results, the percentage of students who were looking for a part-time job within the last year (January to December 2022) increased from 26.8% to 55.2%.

On the other hand, the number of students who have worked part-time within the last year has decreased from 70.0% to 57.4%.

In 2018, 47.9% of students had a part-time job (continuing the part-time job they had already before) although they did not look for a part-time job within a year, compared to 14.2% in 2023.

The study noted that it is possible that the number of students looking for part-time jobs has increased in the past year, as they were previously refraining from working part-time due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among jobs, convenience store/supermarket clerks were the most popular among both university and high school students in terms of jobs they had searched for within the past year and for current part-time job roles. Among high school students in particular, 41.7% of those who searched for jobs within the past year and 25.0% of those who currently have part-time jobs are working as convenience store or supermarket clerks.
