Japan – Majority of private businesses firms say candidates' use of ChatGPT won't affect hiring process (The Mainichi)

30 May 2023

Approximately 70% of recruiting staff at private firms in Japan said the desire to hire a candidate would not be affected by the fact they used the ChatGPT chatbot to create their CVs, coversheets and other materials for the screening process, reports The Mainichi, citing research from staffing firm Workport. The firm conducted a survey on 139 human resource officers at companies across the country between 9th and 16th May. Altogether, 75.5% said the use of the interactive artificial intelligence software by mid-career hire candidates wouldn't affect their desire to hire those candidates, while just 22.3% said it would discourage them from taking the applicants on. Some comments from those who said they didn't care about the use of ChatGPT included, ‘The candidate's writing skills are not our concern, but we check their work experience and achievements’.

Asked whether they would ban the use of ChatGPT in the recruiting process, 71% said they don't plan to. Even if it is banned, it's hard to distinguish the chatbot's writing from that done by humans, and some firms might be skeptical about rule-making regarding the use of the technology, the survey added. Workport also surveyed 480 workers in their 20s to 40s in April concerning ChatGPT. Nearly a third, or 31%, said they have used chatbot in trying to change jobs, with many saying that they used it for composing and revising their writing in applications and other recruitment-related documents.
