05 October 2023

India recorded an estimated 988,000 renewable energy jobs in 2022, with hydropower leading as the top employer with 466,000 jobs, reports Energy World, by the Economic Times, citing data from International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Solar photovoltaic (PV) followed closely, engaging 282,000 individuals in both on-grid and off-grid systems.

IRENA's employment factor analysis highlighted that grid-connected solar PV jobs in India rose by 47% in 2022, reaching a total of 201,400 positions, a sharp increase from the previous year. Around 80,000 individuals were employed in the off-grid solar segment. The fiscal year 2022 brought an additional 52,100 solar industry jobs, mainly in project development. Meanwhile, the wind sector introduced only 600 new construction and installation jobs in 2022. IRENA’s data presented confirms India's commitment to expanding its renewable energy sector, with increased employment opportunities reflecting the country's push towards sustainable energy solutions.
