20 July 2021

The pandemic caused significant jobs losses in the tourism sector in India after the lockdown was implemented, reports the Times of India, citing data from the National Council of Applied Economic Research. The tourism ministry said 14.5 million jobs were lost during the first quarter of 2020, followed by 5.2 million jobs in the second quarter, 1.8 million in the third quarter. India’s travel and tourism sector, which accounts for nearly 2.5% of GDP, has made repeated appeals to the government seeking support for travel and tourism businesses teetering on the brink of collapse due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
