India – Hiring activity jumps 40% in May with boost from travel and hospitality industry

Hiring activity in India recorded year-on-year growth of 40% in May 2022 when compared to May 2021, according to the latest Naukri JobSpeak Index.

The Naukri JobSpeak Index for March stood at 2,863 in May 2022.

The Index showed that the highest increase in hiring during the month under review was recorded in the travel and hospitality sector which surged by 357% year-on-year in May 2022. The growth was attributed to a recovery in the sector from the Covid-19 pandemic which hit the sector hard last year.

Meanwhile, the retail sector saw an increase of 175% over the year while hiring in the real estate sector climbed 141%.

"The recruitment landscape continues to stay resilient and is sustaining the momentum 2022 ushered in. The job market has shown stable sequential trends that is substantially ahead of last year baselines," said Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer, Naukri.com. “The secular nature of trends; cutting across metros as well as non-metros, experienced professionals as well as freshers are again a good indicator of this strong hiring sentiment."

Among metro cities, Delhi/ NCR saw an increase of 63% with Mumbai coming in second with hiring growth of 61%. Among emerging cities, Jaipur saw an increase of 76%, followed by Coimbatore and Vadodara at 64% and 49%.

By experience band, demand for workers with 0-3 years’ experience saw an increase of 61%. Those with 4-7 years and 8-12 years’ experience saw increased hiring of 37% and 22%, respectively. The experience bracket of 13-16 years recorded growth of 26% while those with more than 16 years saw growth of 27%.
