India – Government holds talks with Wistron, Randstad, Adecco and other staffing firms to restart operations (Economic Times)

03 February 2021

India’s Karnataka government yesterday held talks with top executives of Wistron and six staffing firms to get Apple's contract manufacturer to restart operations at its plant near Kolar, reports the Economic Times. The facility has suspended manufacturing activities at its unit after it witnessed riots in December. Apple and Wistron in December 2020 said that there were lapses in payments to workers in its Narasapura facility. Gaurav Gupta, additional chief secretary (industries), Karnataka government, convened the meeting to see if Wistron and staffing firms are facing any roadblocks in restarting operations. Executives from Quess, Randstad, Adecco, Needs, Innov Source and Creative Engineers, and senior police officials attended the meeting. "Wistron had issues related to labour relations and industrial safety and we understand the company has obtained requisite regulatory licences from the government. We are ready to do all that we can to see they resume operations at the earliest," Gupta said. Wistron can reportedly restart its iPhone plant in India only after Apple gives its go-ahead, sources told the Economic Times. Quess Corp recently announced that it sorted out the issue relating to the non-payment of contractual workers with iPhone manufacturer Wistron. Quess Corp and the other staffing firms came under scrutiny in December 2020 as a labour report seen by the Economic Times (paywall) showed labour violations from the staffing firms.
