Hourly wage for temp workers up 1.9% across Japan’s metro areas

The average hourly wage for temporary workers across three major Japanese metropolitan areas in January 2024 stood at JPY 1,688 (USD 11.25), up 1.9% compared to the same period last year and an increase of 0.2% compared to December 2023, according to research from En Japan.

The JPY 1,688 (USD 11.25) wage is the second highest hourly wage in the past 10 years. At the same time, the 1.9% increase marks the 17th consecutive year-on-year increase in wages.

In the Kanto area, the average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,769 (USD 11.79), up 1.5% compared to last year.

Within the Tokai area, the average hourly wage increased year-on-year by 3.1% to JPY 1,476 (USD 9.84).

In the Kansai area, the average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,500 (USD 10.00), up 0.7% over the prior year.
