Australia – Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate improves to 3.5% in September

Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.5% in September 2022, down 1.1% when compared to September 2021, according to labour force data from the Australia Bureau of Statistics.

When compared to the previous month, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged.

The number of unemployed persons stood at 499,400 in September, down by 133,000, or 21.0%, when compared to the same period last year, but up by 8,800 (1.8%) when compared to August 2022.

By state, the highest unemployment rate was seen in South Australia (4.3%) and Tasmania (4.3%) while the lowest was seen in the Australian Capital Territory (3.1%).

Meanwhile, the number of employed persons totalled 13.59 million in September 2022, up 5.4% over the year and unchanged over the month.

The youth unemployment rate stood at 7.9% in September, this was 3.7% lower than March 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

Australia’s labour force participation rate reached 66.6% in September, up 1.9% over the year, and unchanged over the month.

Monthly hours worked in all jobs stood at 1.85 billion, up 7.1% over the year and no change over the month.
